My dear friend Atsuko Hirosawa asked me whether I would be interested in writing some arrangements
for the choir she sings in: The TARO Singers. It would concern a setting of 3 old but popular Japanese
What immedeataly intrigued me was that the choir was interested in what a musician unfamiliar
with Japanese traditions would do with these well known texts and music.
So I happily took the project on, fully aware that I didn't speak a word of Japanese. Luckily Atsuko
helped me with that challenge and made me discover how beautiful the language is.
The fact that I was free to use the melodies any way I wanted makes that these songs feel more as
compositions than arrangements to me.
The songs were premiered by the TARO singers in December 2009.
